The Great Winter Migration: Xai-Xai June 2011
As many of you already know, Contramestre Salles is putting together a trip to Xai-Xai in Mozambique from the 15th - 19th of June. The goal for this trip is to exchange Capoeira movements and experience with the different schools from Mozambique whilst getting a feel for the culture and vibe in the country, and of course, making new friends! All the details are in this post but please contact him directly for more information.
Capoeira Angola Workshops hit Jozi! 14 & 15 May 2011
We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting another weekend of Capoeira Angola Workshops with Gabriel (from Nzinga) and Dunguinha (from FICA), Maputo. For those of you who attended workshops given by them last year would know how much you learned in such a short time that they were here! And those of you who missed out last year, here is your chance to experience a fantastic weekend of Capoeira Angola!
Student Profile | Adrienne Milton | Cidade Do Ouro
This months student of the month features Adrienne Milton, an up and coming capoeirista from the Cidade Do Ouro group in Florida. Young students like Adrienne that have been doing capoeira for over five years are a great testimony to the dedication of instructors Kevin and Jon. Unfortunately Adrienne doesn't have any super powers, but interestingly, it would take 7 people to change her if she was a light bulb! Find out more about her in this student profile.
Capoeira Angola Workshop | Saturday 19 March
This weekend a good (and long time) friend, Charlie from Capoeira Na Praia in Durban, will be in Johannesburg for a short while. Steve has bribed him into doing a Capoeira Angola workshop with us to pass on some knowledge, and more importantly to play some Capoeira. For those who know or who have played with Charles, you can vouch for the level of his game and the experience he has gained after a year living in Brasil. So please, please come join us and make him feel welcome!
Samba Tells a Story
Next Wednesday the 23 of March will see CDC Stoneridge host its monthly themed roda. This month, in keeping with the recent Carnival in Rio, the theme for the roda will be "Carnival". As part of the preparation for this roda we thought it appropriate to give you a bit more information and history on this fascinating past time. Chris Bicourt (a student of CDC and Samba teacher in his own right) has put together a story which will help you to get a better understanding for what the Rio Carnival is about. Please don't forget to bring your 2kg's of non-perishable food to the roda next week - this food will be donated to charity.
Its Carnival time!
From the 4th to the 8th of March this year Brazil ground to a halt as hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets with feasts and fanfare and samba parades with a little bit of Capoeira thrown in for good measure. This months roda theme will be Carnival and we thought it appropriate to give you a bit of history behind this incredible spectacle. Samba tells a story, of the origins and daily lives of a people. It is myth. It is legend. It is a way of life. Samba is beauty. Samba is sadness. Samba is suffering. Samba is hope. Samba is history...
Casa da Capoeira Knysna hosts the first grading of 2011!
Casa da Capoeira Knysna will be hosting the first grading of 2011 from the 1st to the 3rd of April! The grading includes capoeira workshops from Mestre Paulo Palinhos (CDC JHB), Contra-Mestre Espirinho (CDO Cape Town) as well as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu workshop with Coach Marlon Baptista (MMA Tapout Academy Knysna). This is definitely a highlight on the CDC calendar and students from across the country are encouraged to get down to Knysna and show their support for the CDC family!
Learn to Samba with SAMBAJOZI
Bringing the heat and passion of Brazil to South Africa, SambaJozi teach classes, take part in street parades and perform authentic Brazilian Samba with the raw energy of the favelas and inspired by the biggest party on the planet, the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. Today it brings joy, love, passion, sensuality and hope to all those who embrace it, and the carnival style ‘samba no pé’ with the fast hip and foot movement is seen everywhere from birthday parties, braes, small social gatherings, rodas de capoeira, pubs, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, right up to the giant ‘quadras’ of the Samba Schools and the carnival parade itself. It truly is the dance of a nation.
January Roda | Stoneridge Class
Thanks to all the guys and gals who came through to the roda on 26 January. A further thanks to those who donated food (remember that this is the entrance fee to the roda) and from this roda we have managed to collect and donate 130kg for food to Ma-Afrika Tikkun. The theme for the roda this month was "Something New". As you can see from the pictures, some people really made an effort in getting dressed up.
Feliz Ano Novo A Todos!
We wish all of our CDC family members a happy new year and hope that 2011 is even better than 2010. If you are still away on holiday, please travel safely. Keep your eyes on the website and Facebok for updates as to when the various classes will start again.
