We recently recieved a link to a website dedicated to mixed martial arts (MMA) commentary, Bloody Elbow. After going through the full article (click here to check out the full article) we thought we’d pull some of the content (with permission of course) and add it to the site for all to see. MMA is gaining a lot of popularity here in SA and we are certain that it wont be long before we start to see some capoeira techniques being employed by the local fighters.

The second one is captured in Tracy Lee’s spectacular photograph at the top. This one landed much more cleanly though he doesn’t actually put his hand on the ground in this instance. Here we see Roller lunge forward behind a jab that Pettis slips by moving to his left but then he continues to torque his body down and to the left and brings his right leg up high for a beautiful Martelo kick. Note how his shin and instep crash down onto Roller’s head, shoulders and neck.”

“Dave Walsh of Head Kick Legend diagnosed this second kick as being the capoeira move Aú Batido or the “broken cartwheel kick” or the “banana kick”.

Here’s wikipedia’s definition: aú batido is an aú variation where a practitioner does a handstand, followed by a twist with the hips and a split, performing a downward martelo. During the kick, one arm is protecting the face while the other one is obviously supporting the body. Aú batido literally means “broken cartwheel”. This movement is a defensive move, used when attempting to perform a cartwheel and the opponent attacks, generally with a cabeçada, a headbutt, the aú batido takes place, attacking the opponent by surprise before the attack is executed. The aú batido is sometimes also used in doubt or simply as a trick move. This move is also performed in tricking, and for quality, it is also used often in breakdancing where it is known as the L-kick. Names used in different schools may also include Beija Flor (Humming Bird, literally Flower Kiss(er)), Leque (Fan), Aú Québrado (also “broken cartwheel”), Aú Malandro (wily cartwheel), Aú Amazonas (Amazon cartwheel) or Amazonica).

The second kick looks suspiciously more like a chibata no chao/chibata presa, and almost like a chapeu de coro. What do you guys think?

A big shout out to Kid Nate for allowing us to use his text and images here on our website!

A couple of months ago, some of CDC’s students were involved in a video shoot for a MTN add. This is the final product and it is AWESOME!

Be sure to watch the whole clip as this was also a unique opportunity to do a commercial shoot, yet still have the story and message of Capoeira remain so integral and untarnished. Much respect to MTN and to all who were involved!

This months student profile features Aarish "Yet to be given an apelido" Sookdeo from the Norwood class. He initially started Capoeira back in the days of the Melville Class in 2002 but took a long break to focus on his studies. It's good to have hime back!

My Name: Aarish Sookdeo

My Apelido: I dont have one yet

Cordel: Still to grade

Base Class: Norwood

My Age: 26

My Birthday: 8th of June

What line of work are you in, or what are you studying?

I’m an auditor/accountant/gigolo.

How did you get into Capoeira?

A school friend and I used to talk a lot about Tekken 3 (geeks that we were/ still are), Eddy in particular is a personal favorite of mine, so when I finished school I did more research on capoeira and eventually found out about Paulo and Lucas’s class in Melville and started in January 2002. I stopped in September 2002 to focus more on my studies. I joined Steve’s class in February (2010) to continue what I started 8 years ago.

How long have you been involved in Capoeira for?

In total, most probably around a year.

What is your Favourite Capoeira move?

Armada into reversao or anything that involves both feet leaving the ground.

How has Capoeira had an impact on your lifestyle?

I’ve met and befriended some cool people (not all of them charous, I’ll have you know) and become more outgoing and open. I’ve definitely become fitter. And I think I’m slowly but surely developing a height complex thanx to Steve.

What moves are you looking to perfect over the next 6 months?

Any move that doesn’t involve me ending up on my ass.

If you were an item of food, what would you be?

That other food group…ice cream.

If you were a rabid animal, whom would you bite?

Every useless driver that thinks its appropriate to drive at 50 on the far right lane.

What song do you hate the most right now?

Anything Usher or Usher related for the last decade as well as most of the junk on MTV and VH1.

Did just mentioning that song make it get stuck in your head?

No, thank the heavens I have Slayer on in my headphones.

Do you have any super powers?

Irony, sarcasm and minus 6 eye-sight (that’s got to count for something)

If you were a light bulb, how many people would it take to change you?

None, I’d regenerate.

What are your favourite sayings?

“I know right?” Somehow this got into my vocabulary followed by…

“WTF?” Followed by various other expletives and ended with…

“Oh, its like that.”

“It’s a trap.” Especially when Steve calls you to the front of the class and tells you to bend over…lessons hard learnt.

Would you rather die in a blaze of glory or peacefully in your sleep?

I’m Indian, I’m gonna get cremated anyway.

Favourite musician(s)/bands you’ve seen in concert?

I saw Metallica live in 2006, my life has never been an empty hole since.

I listen to a lot of rock and heavy metal. Fav bands are:

Opeth

Agalloch

Metallica

Enslaved

Iron Maiden

Hi Guys

In an effort to try and spice up the content on the website, as well as to help you all to get to know our family in Brazil a bit better, we will be starting to do profiles on the various Mestres in the Associacao de Capoeira Barrevento.

These profiles will be of a similar nature to the student profiles that we already have going on a monthly basis but will be more serious and capoeira orientated. As such, we would like YOU to send us your suggestions for questions that you would like to hear the Mestres respond to. This is the perfect opportunity to get the info that you have always wanted to know but just haven’t been able to in the past – language is a big barrier for most of us!

How can you win?

All you have to do is propose a question that you would like us to include in these interviews/profiles as a comment at the bottom of this post.

The author of the best question will win a months class card for classes at the Stoneridge Class in Modderfontein valued at R 310.00! The competition closes on Friday 3 September 2010 and the winner will be announced on Wednesday the 8th of September 2010.

*The judges decision is final.

*The prize cannot be transfered to another class and is not redeemable for cash.

*The class card is valid for 8 classes over four consecutive weeks from the date of the first class attended.

Once again, CDC has shown its commitment to giving back to the local communities and those less fortunate in South Africa!

We were recently asked to do a brief show for the Reach for a Dream foundation, as part of a campaign to show support for Children with life-threatening illness; mainly HIV. This initiative was driven by P-Cubed Aviation (flight school) and Petronex (pty) LTD (Fuel Company). Together, they arranged a fulfilled day with the kids from various orphanages.

The program for the kids included:

Snacks on arrival

A trip onboard a private Jet over Hartebeespoort / Soccer City

A Braai for lunch

Capoeira workshop

Presentation of flight certificates and gifts

Once we arrived at Lanseria Airport we were escorted to a separate entrance which led past the runway, toward the hangers. For many of us, this was the first time visiting Lanseria and we had the privilege to see it “Back Stage”. We spent some time playing soccer and socialising with the Kids/Staff while groups of them were being flown around JHB (in batches of 6, using two separate Jets). Not expecting anything, we proceeded to stretch and prepare for the workshop. After realising what cool people Caopoeiristas are; the pilot invited us to join them in the skies. Ok I lie, Mestre Stevador has a way with words and organised that. Salute Mestre! LOL

So, there we were, one minute stretching, the next sitting on a plane in our Abadas flying over the city. Definitely an experience to remember! Africa started to feel sick but the pilot quickly handed him a brown paper bag (exactly like in the movies) and everything went smoothly.

Giving the planes some time to rest, we had lunch with the kids and started a workshop on the basics of Capoeira. We played some music and encouraged everyone (including the aviation staff to join). Soon enough, everyone was doing the Ginga, while Kalula planes took off in the background. Passengers must have been confused, with all these “hippies” dancing around, so close to the runway. Every child was presented with a “Citation of Bravery” certificate for their flight and given gifts to remember their experience.
