Student Profile | Sonia “Assustada” de Andrade

My Name: Sonia de Andrade
My Apelido: Assustada
What does your apelido mean and how did you get it?
It refers to someone who is afraid/apprehensive. I think explaining that would be stating the obvious. It might have something to do with my ninja disappearing acts just before gradings? Maybe? Hehe
Cordel: Pending…
Base Class: Winchester Hills
My Age: 27
My Birthday: 28 September 1984
What line of work are you in, or what are you studying?
Got a BA Corporate Communication and doing a BCom Management now. Work in Engineering industry as administration officer working in training division, HR/IR, projects, etc.
How did you get into Capoeira?
Saw it at Monsoon for the first time MANY years ago. I was intrigued. Saw a poster at Bedford gym when I signed up for the gym. Went to my first class apprehensively and fell in love at first ‘post-capoeira-session-cant-walk morning’
How long have you been involved in Capoeira for?
Since the end of my first year in varsity so I must have been about 19. Started at Bedford gym (now Rhapsody;s) Stopped training for a long time due to injuries (and laziness) but that bug – when it bites… Back to Greek club, did some classes with Lucas. Long break again… Now based in South with QuaiStar.
What is your Favourite Capoeira move?
Shoo – how can one choose? However, one day when I’m big, I’d really like to do S-Dobrado properly. And the walk-over. Oh and the macacu, but only because I’ve hated it for so many years and am eventually getting to it. (macacinho at least) I love Armada, Au and Meu Lua Compaso.
How has Capoeira had an impact on your lifestyle?
I spend a lot more time on You Tube than ever before Capoeira is an over-all good workout, flexibility has definitely increased and you get to learn your body, to know your limitations and capabilities. Always want to push yourself a little more, a little further.
What moves are you looking to perfect over the next 6 months?
Basics. Basics. Basics. (especially on my ‘bad’ side. And all capoeistas know what that is)
If you were an item of food, what would you be?
Random?!.. Um an egg? Hard on outside, soft on inside? No eggs stink. I’ll be grapes. Stomped and then matured, and only getting better with age (in a big glass preferably – dry red)
If you were a rabid animal, whom would you bite?
Channing Tatum. Nom Nom Nom.
What song do you hate the most right now?
Commerical bubble gum music. Blergh.
Did just mentioning that song make it get stuck in your head?
Ha! <Sonia> – 1 <Questions attempt at putting bad song in my head> – 0
Do you have any super powers?
I can fall upstairs. Does that count?
If you were a light bulb, how many people would it take to change you?
I don’t like this question – its too much pressure. It’s like the chicken and egg, makes me feel like someone is trying to subliminally divulge into my psyche.
What are your favourite sayings?
I got through phases. Im in the “really?” phase. Everything is “what really?” “really now?” if it was greys season it would be alternated with “seriously?” but given there is no tone in text, the impact is futile. Was that the question or did I miss the agenda completely? #confused
Favourite musician(s)/bands you’ve seen in concert?
I just love music! That’s all. I just want a good beat, in my soul, in my bones. Some good lyrical content for good measure.
